The Howard H. Rye Solo Competition, honoring the founder of the BNYS, is held yearly in late February. The winner of the competition performs with the BNYS at the spring concert. Applications are always due by evening of the first spring rehearsal.
Rules for the Solo Competition:
1. The competition is open ONLY to junior and senior members of the BNYS who have been members of the BNYS the past two complete, consecutive annual seasons. 2. Selections for the competition must be 10 minutes or less, and orchestral accompaniment must be readily available. 3. Applications for the competition are due by the first rehearsal of the spring semester. 3. Students are allowed to audition on a different instrument than the one they play in the BNYS (e.g., piano). 4. Judging will take place on a separate evening than regularly-scheduled rehearsals, and judges will be specialists on the instruments of students competing. 5. Several judges will hear all competitors and select the one BNYS member who is judged most capable of performing successfully in a concert setting. 6. The winner of the solo competition will receive a monetary award. The judges may also decide to present a monetary award to a runner-up.
